A herbal conference for Black and Indigenous Herbalists and Community
About The Gathering
The Gullah Geechee Herbal Gathering is an herbal conference for Black and Indigenous Herbalists and community that takes place on Gullah Geechee owned land on John's Island, SC. The Gullah Geechee Herbal Gathering is more than a herbal conference—it's a sacred reunion of Black and Indigenous herbalists, healers, farmers, birthworkers, and community members. Founded by Khetnu Nefer, a proud Gullah/Geechee native of Johns Island, SC, this gathering is a heartfelt tribute to ancestral wisdom and a commitment to cultural preservation.
Rooted in Heritage. Led by Spirit. Built for Our Future.
The Gullah Geechee Herbal Gathering exists to preserve, celebrate, and elevate the ancestral plant medicine traditions of Black and Indigenous people, with a sacred focus on the Gullah Geechee culture of the Sea Islands.
We are a living tribute to our herbal lineages — a space for reconnection, rest, and remembering. Our mission is to:
-
Protect and amplify traditional healing knowledge
-
Empower future generations of herbalists, midwives, and wellness workers
-
Build a thriving, intergenerational community of practitioners rooted in cultural respect and holistic care
Whether you’re a seasoned herbalist or a curious spirit reclaiming your roots, the Gathering offers you a homecoming.

We’re Planning Something Powerful for 2026
As we prepare for our 5th annual gathering, we're taking a transformative step forward. In 2026, we will not be accepting workshop submissions for the conference, as we are hand curating a unique experience that blends traditional practices with innovative approaches to healing and community building. This intentional shift allows us to deepen our connection to the land, our ancestors, and each other.
What to expect:
-
Curated Experiences: Engage in thoughtfully designed sessions that honor Gullah Geechee herbal traditions and explore contemporary healing modalities.
-
Cultural Immersion: Participate in ceremonies, storytelling, and practices that celebrate our rich heritage.
-
Community Connection: Build lasting relationships with fellow herbalists and healers in a nurturing environment.
-
Marketplace: Support Black and Indigenous artisans and entrepreneurs showcasing herbal products, crafts, and more.
